Nestled on the south shore of the scenic Barkley Sound, Bamfield is a tiny town that stamps a big impression on anyone who is blessed to visit. Adjacent to the Broken Islands and about 2-2.5 hours from Port Alberni, the road to Bamfield might be a bumpy ride but is completely worth the trek. Bamfield is enthralled with luxurious, remote beaches, old growth rainforests, incredible hiking trails and some of the best halibut and salmon fishing on the West Coast. Bamfield is also accessible by boat down the Alberni Canal, where many people take the journey leisurely to try their luck fishing along the way. The Fraces Barkley also does year-round trips from Port Alberni down the canal to Bamfield and back which takes approximately 4.5 hours each way. The ship stops off for visitors to get off, stretch their legs and do some exploring of the majestic village. Traveling to the West Coast via the water is an incredible experience, with scenery leaving you breathless and the opportunity to see wild and sea life throughout your expedition. Passengers of the Frances Barkley report spotting bears snacking on the shoreline, seals basking on the rocks and a variety of seabirds in the air. Depending on the time of year, you might even see migrating whales.
